    Clergy Appreciation Sunday

This coming Sunday is clergy appreciation Sunday for our church.  It was supposed to happen last Sunday but my Bride and I were off on a weekend retreat for the youth groupers.

Here is a list of some "clergy" that I appreciate:
The VERY first sermon that ever made me believe that I could be a minister was a eulogy.  It was delivered by the late Rev. E.V. Hill, for his first wife.  I remember that Josh Furnal was given this tape by Doug Raymond.  The tape was a Focus on the Family broadcast where Dobson and co-host spent 10 minutes pre-apologizing for the passion with which Mr. Hill spoke. Whatever.  I remember sitting on my living room floor listening to that cassette tape on my Dad's old stereo set - underneath the TV. I vividly remember being adversely affected by the message.  I laughed, I cried, I became a black layman in Mr. Hill's audience screaming in my spirit, "BLESSED!"  But most of all, the concept that I could be an effective teacher/preacher for Christ was planted in me.

Thanks to Youtube you can listen to the eulogy yourself.  PLEASE, do yourself a favor and listen.  There's only two ten minute sections:

The second minister that changed me was Dave Nolte.  I decided that I was going to learn how to be an effective church leader - and that means humbly letting someone "boss you around."  Dave didn't boss me around at all, but my attitude during that summer was under that impression.  Dave had been in youth ministry and preaching ministry for a long time, and he was an excellent model for effective ministry.

Maurice McNeely comes next.  Maurice, with pressure from myself, worked as the interim minister at Town & Country.  He taught me tons of crucial simple stuff that I think about almost every week of my life.

Tim Hawkins comes next.  Hawkins was the Christian Campus House minister in Warrensburg, MO, until he transitioned into the Sojourn Collegiate Ministry in Boston, MA. Before I worked as an intern at the Campus House, I took two of Hawkins' classes at CCCB, Postmodern Ministries and Denominational Theologies - botof those classes made me question everything about ministry.  I learned a lot in my internship, but I feel like I don't truly understand college ministry because I wasn't there during the school year.

Other Ministers and Laypeople who made a profound impact in my life, but only understood from hindsight:
Elder Doug Keiler in DSM; Worship Minister Dave Boushard, who baptized me in December 1990; Elder and interim minister Gayle Juhl in DSM; and D. Scott Schoberg, my youth minister when I was a youth.

    For the love of God,
    Tim

    My Eternal Netflix Question

I'm always asking myself this question on Netflix:
Should I give movies that I haven't seen a poor rating because I know I will hate them?

For example, I know I will never want to watch Firehouse Dog.  And because I will never want to watch it, I don't have knowledge enough to rate it.
Here's the flip side of the problem: if I don't give poor movies like Firehouse Dog a bad rating than I will be recommended other movies of the same ilk.
One of the other benefits of possibly giving poor movies the rating that they deserve (without watching them) is that I will have a higher rated movies score.  Currently I have rated 1,456 movies (that also includes TV shows that have appeared on DVD, each season receives a separate score). My buddy Nate Cox has rate 2,825 movies, which is a significant difference from me.
So, I've been going through all of the movies that I can remember seeing, and trying to rate them and up my "score."
Some movies that i remember from my childhood were fantastic THEN, but are they any good nowadays?  Should I waste my time re-watching that childhood movie to make sure its still as cool?  Some movies should come with a warning: WARNING: SUPERMAN III is not as cool as you remember it!

    Tim

    My Wilco Experience

Last Tuesday my bride and I went to see Wilco in Kansas City, MO.

Here's a picture of us waiting for the opening band to begin:

Starting in Springfield, MO, with a show that I saw with Dude some time ago, I met with Sound Engineer Stan Doty and at every show I have spoken with him.  The latest sound board that he was working on was state-of-the-art and it was pretty cool just watching him do his magic on it. Here's Stan in this pic:

I know this is a blurry shot, but it proves we were there:

Before Wilco played Stan said that he would give me his set list, and he was true to his word:

After the show I asked Stan if there was a chance I could get some autographs from the band.  He pointed to an after-party that was going on in stage right, but he also said that the lead singer, Jeff Tweedy, doesn't go to many of the after parties, instead he likes to head straight for his tour bus.

So, we went over the the after party area where a bouncer told us that you couldn't buy your way in, you had to know somebody.  When I asked him if there was any way we could get an autograph or picture he said that sometimes if you wait by the tour buses you can get one as they head out of town.

We went over to the buses where we met another couple, Shannon and his wife Michelle.  Shannon said that it was his birthday in 10 minutes (it was 10 till midnight) and that Wilco was his favorite band too.
There were three tour buses and one Semi-trailer for the tour.  I asked the first bus who was on it, and they said it was for the opening band.  The second bus had it's interior lights on, and there was no noticeable activity in the third bus.  Shannon and I nosed around the second bus, and I found Jeff Tweedy having a conversation/argument with someone who claimed that he was Jeff's brother from the doorway of the bus.
This supposed brother stormed off with his wife cursing Jeff's name... then minutes later I guess they decided that they weren't as mad as they once thought as they walked toward the after party. (My guess is that they were trying an old-school con, Like in There Will Be Blood and that the dude wasn't Jeff's brother, just somebody looking for a handout.)
BUT - we found Jeff's bus! So we hung back for a bit and I explained to Shannon and our brides that this was indeed Jeff's bus, and he needs some cool-down time.
I got the cajones to knock on the bus door.  What's the worst that can happen?  Jeff's assistant (not his manager, because that's Tony Margarita and I've seen him in some Wilco videos) came to the door and I said, "My buddy Shannon's birthday is today, and we were wondering if we could get a quick photo with Jeff?"
"Jeff is having a rough night, but I'll see what I can do."
At this point I looked at Jenna and asked her to get her phone ready to take a picture of me, and she said that she was good to go.
A minute later, Jeff came down and shook Shannon's hand saying happy birthday.  They took a picture, and I moved in asking for a pic myself.  Jeff asked me who I was, and Shannon said I was his "brother" (kind of ironic now that I think of it).
Instead of Jenna getting out her phone to take the picture, she let Shannon's wife, Michelle take it, and told me to pull down my shirt because it was popping up! [Gosh Mom!]

Shannon emailed me the pic the next morning, and said that I earned it because I had the cajones to knock and ask for the pic.  (Knock and the door shall be opened, ask you will receive.)
The best part was that the people in the after party did not get to meet the lead singer/song writer, I DID SUCKA!  As we walked to our car I told Jenna that I felt like Josh Furnal when he met Iron and Wine or when he took that awesome class by NT Wright
    For the love of God,
    Tim
